The focus of Material Girls is to bring together people who enjoy social sewing and sharing ideas while creating wearable articles, accessories for personal and home use, and other fabric art items.
Our membership includes expert and novice sewers and all levels in between. Our projects provide opportunities to hone existing skills and learn new techniques and methods. We aim for variety from items that can be finished in one day to others that may take a few days to complete. Members work at their own pace in a congenial and non-judgmental environment.
An annual activity is called BUMFAB. BUMFAB stands for either “butt ugly material” or “beautiful unique material” depending on your personal perspective. Participating members receive a small piece of the carefully chosen fabric and must use it to create an item that is then submitted anonymously to the BUMFAB Chairperson and revealed to the membership at a fun-filled brunch event. We also participate in the Art Expo that is held in March.
We welcome new members at any time during the season. Anyone with an interest in sewing is welcome to join. The membership fee is $10.00 for the year. Each member is responsible for supplying her own sewing machine, notions and other supplies. The Club works in the Coronado Room every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
